Michael was born in Minneapolis and spent much of his youth surrounded by various animals at his extended family’s farms. As a youth, he brought in an assortment of birds, cats,
and dogs, which his mother and stepfather gladly accepted as part of the family. Being an animal and nature-lover was a deeply ingrained part of who our family is. Michael graduated
from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and then the University of Oregon Law School. While residing in Anchorage, Alaska with his partner, Leslie, Michael found the career of his lifetime in becoming the first Alaska State Director for the Humane Society of the United States. Michael advocated tirelessly for both companion and wild animals throughout his beloved state. Ever faithful to the German Shepherd breed and always the caregiver of at least one, Michael and Leslie also made a place in their hearts for a village dog named Hooper, who was brought back with Leslie from a job in Hooper Bay, AK. Dogs and their mutual love of animals were the backbone of Michael and Leslie’s relationship. There is no more significant way to remember them both than by carrying forth their passion and respect for all animals.
